Southern Miss basketball player John Wade III has been granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA.
“The extension of eligibility waiver submitted by The University of Southern Mississippi on behalf of John Wade III has been approved pursuant to NCAA Division I Bylaw 12.8.1.7.1.3 (extraordinary and extreme hardship during the 2022-2023 academic year) based on new information submitted on behalf of Mr. Wade,” Southern Miss said in a statement sent Friday to the Hattiesburg American. “We will have no further comment other than to say we are happy for John and appreciative of all involved in the process.”
Wade, a 6-foot-4 guard from Oakland, California, wrote on X, formerly know as Twitter, “God is the greatest,” on Friday.
Wade transferred to Southern Miss this season, but the NCAA said his eligibility had expired and he could not play. He sued the NCAA on Dec. 20, but had a judge denied a temporary restraining order four days later.
A hearing was held on Jan. 10 before U.S. District Court Judge Taylor McNeel at the William M. Colmer Federal Courthouse in Hattiesburg, but no decision was made at the time. Coach Jay Ladner and To The Top NIL collective owner Peter Boehme were among those who testified. Wade’s teammates also attended the hearing.
Southern Miss (8-10, 3-3 Sun Belt Conference) lost at South Alabama on Wednesday and plays at Texas State on Saturday (4 p.m., ESPN+).
Wade enrolled at UC Davis in 2018 but was not on the basketball team. He transferred to Contra Costa Community College and joined its basketball team for the 2019-20 season. It did not hold a season in 2020-21 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He then transferred to Cal State Northridge for the 2022-23 season but sat out because he said he was harassed by then-coach Trent Johnson. Wade transferred again to Cal State Stanislaus last season.
The NCAA argued that Wade was ineligible because his five-year eligibility clock began when he was at UC Davis, even if he wasn’t on the basketball team.
