DURHAM — There’s opportunity in adversity, something Duke basketball coach Jon Scheyer learned as a player under five-time national champion Mike Krzyzewski.
For the first time since their Thanksgiving week loss to Kansas in Las Vegas, the third-ranked Blue Devils are facing adversity with Maliq Brown set to miss weeks because of a knee injury.
“You don’t want it to happen, but I was taught – maybe Coach K was just saying this because we were losing a lot of games my freshman year in January – but he talked about January being a defining month and a month you can find something,” Scheyer said after Duke’s 89-54 rout of Miami on Tuesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
“And I really found that to be true during my time here as a player or as a coach. For us, it’s just an opportunity to find something.”

With Brown donning a black Duke hoodie and warmup pants on the Blue Devil bench, Duke (15-2, 7-0 ACC) won its 11th game in a row and had a 34-8 advantage in bench points against Miami. The 26-point margin was the largest gap against a Power Four opponent this season.
“I could go down the line, really, of each of ‘em and what they did … different guys stepping up,” Scheyer said. “One of the things with Maliq being out, I wanted to just continue to find something new about our team.”
