Mississippi State basketball took a slight fall in this week’s NCAA tournament projections.
The Bulldogs (14-2, 2-1 SEC) beat Vanderbilt on the road last Tuesday but lost by five points at home to Kentucky on Saturday, snapping an eight-game winning streak. This week, they play at Auburn (15-1, 3-0) on Tuesday (6 p.m., SEC Network) and host Ole Miss (14-2, 3-0) on Saturday (5 p.m., ESPN2).
Here is where MSU stands in the latest NCAA tournament projections.
Mississippi State basketball NCAA tournament projections
CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm has Mississippi State as a No. 5 seed in the South Region. It would face No. 12 Bradley in Providence. The winner would play either No. 4 Purdue or No. 13 South Alabama.
ESPN’s Joe Lunardi lists Mississippi State as a No. 4 seed in the West Region, matching up with No. 13 St. Louis. The winner would face either No. 5 Illinois or No. 12 McNeese. Both games would be played in Denver.

Mississippi State basketball’s NCAA tournament resume
The Bulldogs are No. 17 in the NCAA NET rankings as of Tuesday. They’ve been inside the top 20 since Dec. 15. MSU is 4-1 in Quad 1 games, 2-1 in Quad 2 and a combined 8-0 in Quads 3 and 4. Saturday’s loss to Kentucky was a Quad 1 loss.
Butler, Mississippi State’s other loss, has lost four games already this month and has dropped to No. 89 in the NET rankings. It will become a Quad 3 loss if Butler slips below No. 100.
Both of MSU’s games this week are Quad 1.
Mississippi State basketball’s NCAA tournament history under Chris Jans
The Bulldogs have made the NCAA tournament twice in coach Chris Jans’ two seasons but haven’t won a game.
In 2023, they were in the First Four and lost to Pitt by one point. Last season, No. 8 seed MSU lost by 18 to No. 9 Michigan State in the first round.
Mississippi State last won an NCAA tournament game in 2008, a first-round win against Oregon. It has not advanced past the round of 32 since 1996.
