Texas A&M (13-3, 2-1 SEC) will likely take a slight drop in the rankings after falling to No. 5 Alabama on Saturday night, falling 94-88 in one of the weirder foul-heavy games of the weekend, as both teams combined for 88 free throws.
However, the Aggies finished a dismal 28-48 from the stripe. While star guard Wade Taylor IV was absent for his second consecutive game, there was no excuse for missing half of the free attempts, as an average showing would have likely resulted in another top-25 win.
Nonetheless, the Aggies are well-prepared for Tuesday’s away game against No. 6 Kentucky, who recently secured a narrow victory on the road against No. 14 Mississippi State on Saturday. Like Alabama, they are also among the top shooting teams in the nation.
Every week presents a challenge for the Aggies, but after a solid start in conference play combined with losing just two games in November and December, Texas A&M is a lock (right now) to earn an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. Here are the latest SEC at-bid projections per BartTorvik:
Auburn: 100.0%
Tennessee: 99.9%
Alabama: 99.9%
Florida: 99.9%
Kentucky: 99.7%
Mississippi State: 99.6%
Texas A&M: 99.4%
Ole Miss: 98.2%
Georgia: 94.9%
Missouri: 88.1%
Texas: 75.0%
Oklahoma: 72.5%
Vanderbilt: 28.9%
Arkansas: 10.1%
LSU: 0.0%
South Carolina: 0.0%
Texas A&M will return to face No. 6 Kentucky at Rupp Arena on Jan. 14 at 6:00 p.m. CST. The game can be watched on ESPN2.
