Three area basketball players are recognized for their play last week; who they are

Monday brought some college basketball hardware to the state capital.

Brown’s women picked up a pair of Ivy League awards and the Providence College men claimed one from the Big East.

Grace Arnolie, Aima Ofunrein and Ryan Mela all came up with standout performances to help the Bears and Friars find some success last week. Their respective conferences offered some recognition after Brown took out Yale and Providence swept a two-game homestand against Butler and Seton Hall.

Brown’s Grace Arnolie (21), in action against Bryant earlier this season, had a career-high 35 points in a 77-69 win over Yale and was named Ivy League Player of the Week.

Arnolie was named the Ivy League Player of the Week thanks to a career-high 35 points in a 77-69 win over Yale. She finished 10-for-20 from the field and missed just one of her 14 attempts at the foul line. Arnolie added seven assists and two steals as the Bears pulled even at 1-1 in league play.

It was the fifth time Arnolie has hit for at least 20 points this season and represented a significant bounce-back effort. She finished with just four points on 1-for-13 shooting last time out in a loss against Dartmouth, snapping a string of six straight games in double figures. Arnolie leads Brown in scoring, assists and steals through 15 games in 2024-25.

Brown’s Aima Ofunrein had 14 points against Yale and was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week.

Ofunrein was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week after 14 points on 7-for-7 shooting against Yale. It was the sixth time she’s reached double figures and matched a career high in field goals made. Ofunrein added six rebounds while starting and playing 24 minutes, a key frontcourt presence with veteran Ada Anamekwe (undisclosed) still sidelined due to injury.

PC forward Ryan Mela Mela totaled 17 points, 24 rebounds and nine assists in a pair of wins for the Friars last wee3k and was named Big East Freshman of the Week.
