BOCA RATON — Florida Atlantic suffered its third home loss of the season Sunday, falling to Alabama-Birmingham 81-76 in an American Athletic Conference clash.

Trailing by as much as 12 in the second half, the Owls made a furious comeback to retake the lead with less than three minutes remaining. However, it wasn’t enough to walk away victorious as the home team went cold in the final minutes.

Forward Tre Carroll’s 20 points led the way for the Owls (9-8, 2-2). KyKy Tandy and Kaleb Glenn added 14 and 13 points, respectively. Forward Yaxel Lendeborg led UAB (10-7, 3-1) with a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double.

FAU will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday when the Owls travel to New Orleans to play Tulane.

FAU forward Tre Carroll, who led the Owls with 20 points, goes up for a basket while defended by two Blazers.

It wasn’t necessarily a bad performance from the Owls from a box score perspective. FAU shot 40% from the field, hit 8 of its 22 three-pointers and outrebounded UAB, 46-40. What made the difference was the Owls’ carelessness with the ball.

FAU turned the ball over 11 times and had 16 assists. The Blazers scored 14 points off those turnovers. In a game decided by five points, the Owls probably wish they could have a few of those turnovers back.

On the other hand, FAU forced six Blazer turnovers, only one in the first half. Additionally, FAU missed five free throws, which eventually came back to haunt them.

“They’ll sleep on it, they’re good kids,” Florida Atlantic coach John Jakus said. “We’ll clean up things. As a coach, I’ll do my job better, and we’ll let them respond.”

Poor shot selection down the stretch aids Blazers

The Owls managed to keep the game close in the first half thanks to their three-point shooting. FAU made 6 of its 12 threes, keeping the game…
