Texas vs Tennessee: Preview, prediction, how to watch men’s basketball game

After stirring rally fell short against No. 2 Auburn Tuesday, Texas basketball gets another shot at a signature win against No. 1 Tennessee (14-1, 1-1) Saturday at Moody Center.

Despite a late flurry led by Arthur Kaluma, Texas (11-4, 0-2 SEC) never regained the lead against Auburn after clawing out an 8-6 edge early into the game. Kaluma, a senior forward who transferred to Texas from Kansas State in the offseason, scored a career-high 34 points and almost willed the Longhorns to an unlikely rally.

Auburn led 75-58 with just under 5 minutes left in the game, but Kaluma and guard Jordan Pope (19 points) triggered a late surge that pulled Texas as close as three points late in the contest. The Longhorns stay home looking for their first win SEC play.

Rick Barnes returns to Texas

Barnes worked as the Texas head coach for 17 seasons from 1998-2015. Even though he left Austin almost a decade ago, his imprint remains on the program’s record books as well as on the current coaching staff.

During his time at Texas, Barnes became UT’s all-time leader in wins and compiled a record of 582-402. He led the Longhorns to 16 NCAA Tournament berths and the program’s only Final Four of the modern era in 2003. Texas head coach Rodney Terry and two members of his staff — assistant coach Frank Haith and general manager Chris Ogden — served on Rick Barnes’ staff at Texas in the 2000s.
