Purdue basketball vs. Rutgers player ratings: Boilers vets school Scarlet Knights pups

Despite a frigid perimeter shooting night, Purdue basketball rolled to a 68-50 road victory over Rutgers at Jersey Mike’s Arena.

The Boilermakers made only 4-of-23 from 3-point range, or this really would have been a rout.

STARTERS

∎ Braden Smith: 9/10*

Stellar again. Had that sixth sense working on several of his 14 assists — driving down through the lane and firing back out to multiple shooters. In command on offense and playing some of his most disruptive defense of the season. Helped limit star freshman Dylan Harper to six points.

∎ C.J. Cox: 7/10

Quietly around a lot of positive plays — such as on a tight close-out helping force a first-half travel. Also ready when needed, such as on the 3-pointer he sank off one of Smith’s dazzling dishes.

∎ Fletcher Loyer: 7/10

Began aggressively looking for his shot earlier. Ended up among the many Boilermakers struggling to score from behind the arc. Still had the floater and mid-range working and seemed to hit buckets when Purdue needed a jolt.

∎ Caleb Furst: 7/10

That one-handed dunk four-plus minutes in sent a message and helped set a tone. His defensive versatility and ability to reach into passing lanes helped create a few of those 12 first-half Rutgers turnovers. His third foul so early in the second half — and so soon after Kaufman-Renn picked up his third — truncated another positive performance.

∎ Trey Kaufman-Renn: 6/10

Foul trouble mostly kept him stapled to the bench over the first 25-plus minutes. Then came in and asserted himself when Boilers badly needed his low-post presence. Doesn’t need to shoot 90% at the line,…
