By the week’s end, Auburn basketball will have gone as far west and east as the SEC could take it, fending off the Texas Longhorns on Tuesday to make Bruce Pearl the winningest coach in the program’s history, and it’ll try to fend off South Carolina at noon Saturday to further Pearl’s win total.

“By the slippery rock theory, which you all know I live by, South Carolina beat Clemson. Clemson beat Kentucky. Kentucky beat Duke. Duke beat Auburn,” Pearl said Thursday. “I’ve always lived by that theory. Obviously, South Carolina is not off to a great start in the league, but they’ve played at (Mississippi State) and Alabama at home. Alabama and (Mississippi State), probably going to be in the top five of our league, so it’s hard to get a gauge. The gauge is that slippery rock theory.”

If the Tigers beat the Gamecocks, they’d have their second-straight 2-0 start in SEC play, and it’d be their third start of such fashion in the past five seasons.
