Texas A&M (13-2, 2-0 SEC) entered Wednesday’s matchup against No. 17 Oklahoma with a 2-0 conference play on the line as the Aggies looked to reverse course amid coach Buzz Williams’ usual poor starts during previous SEC seasons.
However, Sooners guard Brycene Goodine, who entered the contest averaging just six points per game, had other plans, as the senior shot his way to a career-high 34 points, including 9-11 from beyond the arc in one of the craziest performances of the year.
Without star guard Wade Taylor IV, who missed his second career game, Williams needed to rely on senior guard Zhuric Phelps to take over the scoring duties, and in the second half, the Midland, Texas native had his career night.
After scoring six points before the half, Phelps played out of his mind after the Aggies trailed by 18 points, finding his stroke from three, leading to 28 points and a 6-11 showing from range, as the senior’s play combined improved defense led Texas A&M’s fourth Quad 1 win on the year.
After defeating the Sooners 80-78, No. 10 Texas A&M will host No. 5 Alabama on Saturday, as the Tide are coming off a 20-point road win over South Carolina on Wednesday.
This matchup will be the first Top 10 showdown to take place at Reed Arena as the Aggies look to extend their nine-game winning streak against one of the best rosters in the country.
