SOUTH KINGSTOWN – It looked for a moment like the University of Rhode Island men might be able to escape this latest slow start.
The Rams surged to their first lead with 8:29 to play Wednesday night and seemed to have all the momentum. George Washington was reeling and the Ryan Center felt ready to celebrate another comeback over the final 20 minutes.
The Revolutionaries had other ideas down the stretch, and URI couldn’t complete the long run uphill. Conventional three-point plays by Sean Hansen and Jacoi Hutchinson started the downfall, as the Rams faded to a 75-67 defeat.

URI managed just two field goals on its last seven shots and went scoreless for spans of 1:43 and 2:00. That was all George Washington needed to drop a shorthanded group that played without David Green (left shoulder) and David Fuchs (toe).
“We didn’t play well enough to win or deserve to win,” URI coach Archie Miller said. “You go through highs and lows in a season with a group, and right now our group is limping around a little bit.”
Hansen snapped the last tie of the night with his basket inside. That three-point play made it a 64-61 game with 4:14 left. Hutchinson went backdoor off the right side out of the final media timeout for another three-point play, and it was suddenly a 67-61 difference with 3:44 to play.
“Discipline and fatigue played a role at the end of the game,” Miller said. “Broken spirit, so to speak. Sometimes you just cave in.”
Jamarques Lawrence connected on a floater in the lane to give the Rams their first field goal in 5:03, but the next one didn’t come until a Jaden House layup inside the final 10 seconds. Hansen and Hutchinson each dropped a pair of free throws and Trey Autry’s steal led to a Rafael Castro dunk in transition with 1:27 left. URI called…
