Texas basketball vs Auburn: No. 2 Tigers hold on for win, knock UT to 0-2 in SEC play

[ad_1]

For the second consecutive game, Texas basketball (11-4, 0-2 SEC) fell short against one of the top teams in the nation’s toughest conference.

And things don’t get any easier for Texas after Tuesday’s 87-82 loss to No. 2 Auburn (14-1, 2-0), which followed an emotional loss to Texas A&M this past weekend. The Longhorns welcome in No. 1 Tennessee and former Texas coach Rick Barnes to Moody Center for their next game Saturday, and they have plenty of things to work on over the next few days.

Texas forward Arthur Kaluma drives past Auburn forward Chaney Johnson for a layup during Auburn’s 87-82 win Tuesday at Moody Center. Kaluma scored a career-high 34 points in the loss, which dropped Texas to 0-2 in SEC play.

Despite a late flurry led by Arthur Kaluma, Texas never regained the lead against Auburn after clawing out an 8-6 edge 2 minutes into the game. Kaluma, a senior forward who transferred to Texas from Kansas State in the offseason, scored a career-high 34 points and almost willed the Longhorns to an unlikely rally. Auburn led 75-58 with just under 5 minutes left in the game, but Kaluma and guard Jordan Pope (19 points) triggered a late surge that pulled Texas as close as three points late in the contest.

Freshman Tre Johnson added 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting for Texas, but no other Longhorn reached double-figures in scoring.

The Longhorns’ depth took a hit when guard Chendall Weaver left the game with a right hip flexor and did not return. Texas coach Rodney Terry didn’t have a status update on Weaver immediately after the game.

Johni Broome, Auburn’s 6-foot-10, 240-pound post, led Auburn with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
