PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Wisconsin men’s basketball team scored its first road win of the season Monday and may have dodged a serious injury to one of its starters.

Senior guard Max Klesmit suffered an apparent right ankle injury during the second half of the Badgers’ 75-63 victory over Rutgers at Jersey Mike’s Arena.

The Neenah native suffered the injury with 10 minutes 8 seconds left in the game.

Officials had stopped play due to an off-the-ball foul on Rutgers center Emmanuel Ogbole. Klesmit, who had the ball at the time, used the stoppage to take a three-pointer and came down on the foot of Jeremiah Williams, who stepped in on the close out.

Wisconsin coach Greg Gard was optimistic about Klesmit health after the game.

“I haven’t talked to the trainer yet. He had his shoe back on walking around in the locker room,” Gard said. “Klesmit is a tough kid. He’ll be OK.”

The team has an off day Tuesday before two days of practice in preparation for Minnesota, which comes to the Kohl Center on Friday night.

Injuries are never good, but Klesmit’s was especially ill timed. It came just as he appeared to be heating up.

He missed his first four shots but hit a three to give UW a 54-45 lead with 11½ minutes left. The next time down the floor, he splashed another three that was waved off due to an illegal screen by Steven Crowl. Klesmit even hit the shot that resulted in the injury, banking it off the glass.

Klesmit tied for the team high with three assists, two that went for a dunk or layup. He left the locker room wearing a walking boot and was not made available to reporters.
