Swampcast talks Florida football, Florida basketball matchup with No. 1 Tennessee

In this week’s Swampcast, Kevin Brockway and Noah Ram from the Gainesville Sun discuss the Florida football offseason and No. 8 Florida basketball hosting No. 1 Tennessee in a marquee college basketball showdown.

Florida Gators football has continued its positive momentum from the end of the 2024, signing five-star wide receiver Dallas Wilson over the holiday break after he was released from his financial aid agreement with Oregon. Brockway said he came away impressed with two other UF wide receiver signees ―Vernell Brown III and Naeshaun Montgomery ― after watching them play in the Under Armour All-America game in DeLand last week.

“Vernell Brown flashed a little bit and so did Naeshaun Montgomery, a borderline three/four-star receiver who was at Cardinal Newman then went to Miami Central for his senior year,” Brockway said. “And I watched him work out a little bit too in Disney, and he’s another guy who has some sneaky potential, made some nice catches on deep balls, had a TD catch in the Under Armour game, did a little back flip, caught a two-point conversion.”

Florida basketball (13-1, 0-1 SEC) suffered its first loss of the season at Kentucky over the weekend, falling 106-100 in a game dominated by offense.

“It’s one game, and SEC teams are going to be beating up on each other all season,” Ram said. “But that’s the concerning thing, the defense, giving up that many points to a Kentucky team that’s good, but it’s not a historically great offense.”

Later, Brockway and Ram were joined by Chris Dortch of the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook to break down UF’s next basketball opponent, as No. 1 Tennessee comes to the O’Connell on Tuesday (7 p.m., ESPN2). The Vols always play rugged defensive under 10th-year coach Rick Barnes but Dortch said this season’s Tennessee team, led by North Florida transfer guard Chaz Lanier, is improved offensively.
