COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M flexed its considerable muscle in the second half while pulling away from Texas basketball for an 80-60 win in the SEC opener for both squads Saturday at Reed Arena.
The two teams were tied at 37-37 after a scintillating first half, but the No. 12 Aggies (12-2, 1-0 SEC) took control inside against Texas (11-3, 0-1) after the break. Texas A&M scored 48 points in the paint and added another 24 points from the free-throw line. The Longhorns countered that inside attack by making six of 14 3-pointers in the first half, but they made just one 3-pointer on 12 attempts in the second half.
As a team, Texas shot 34.6% from the floor, well below its season average of 51.7%.
