Red-hot UTEP men’s basketball team rolls past Sam Houston for sixth consecutive win

When the UTEP men’s basketball team is playing good offense, making free throws and grabbing rebounds, matters are going quite well indeed.

The Miners did most things well in an 81-72 victory over defending Conference USA regular-season champion Sam Houston State that ran their winning streak to six games and their record to 12-3, and what they did best was have fun.

UTEP’s Corey Camper Jr. (4) dribbles the ball during a men’s basketball game against Sam Houston on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.

The defense was there like it always is, but this version of the Miners was high-flying and entertaining, as they ran off and left the Bearkats with a 15-2 run in the first half and a 15-0 surge in the second.

The lead was double figures by the midpoint of the second half and UTEP kept Sam Houston at arm’s length the rest of the way.

When the game was being decided, the Miners flirted with shooting 60% and were actually outrebounding the Bearkats until giving up a flurry of Sam Houston boards down the stretch.

Devon Barnes got UTEP going early and led the Miners with 17 points, as five Miners had nine or more. Corey Camper scored 16, while David Terrell Jr. had 11 points, six assists and four rebounds.

Miners up 10 at half

UTEP broke open a close first half late with a 15-2 run and rode that to a 39-29 halftime lead. That advantage was 24-23 before the surge, when UTEP scored on six of eight possessions and held Sam Houston to one field goal in the last 6:33.

That field goal was a 3 right before the buzzer, as Sam Houston stopped some bleeding with the last four points of the first half.

The Miners outshot the Bearkats 60-41% and forced nine turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Corey Camper led the Miners with nine points in the half.
