Kansas State basketball lets shot at rare road victory slip through its fingers

It was there for the taking, and with three minutes left Kansas State’s basketball team could not have positioned itself any better to steal a rare Big 12 road victory.

That is until the bottom fell out and a lid fell over the basket.

TCU, down six after K-State’s Max Jones knocked down a 3-pointer with 3 minutes, 14 seconds left, answered with seven straight points to close out the game and edge the Wildcats, 63-62, Saturday at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

Noah Reynolds scored the game winner on a short jumper from the left side of the lane with 12.8 seconds on the clock.

“This was one heck of a Big 12 basketball game with an incredible environment,” was K-State coach Jerome Tang’s quick take after watching Dug McDaniel’s potential game winner on a driving layup rim out and Coleman Hawkins’ tip attempt miss the mark as well. “They made one more play than we did.

“You can give them credit for playing really good defense.”

True, after Jones’ 3-pointer, K-State missed its last four field goal attempts, and worse, came up empty on two one-and-one free-throw opportunities in the last minute and a half. But the Wildcats shot 54.8% in the second half while limiting TCU to 41.2%, which made it all the more frustrating.

With the loss, K-State fell to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12, while TCU improved to 8-5 and 1-1. It was K-State’s 12th straight road loss dating back to last January.

K-State still led by a point when Hawkins blocked Trazarien Smith’s layup and David N’Guessan corralled the rebound — his 17th of the game — with 23 seconds left. But N’Guessan missed the one-and-one, setting the stage for Reynolds’ game winner.
