Jan. 4—MAYVILLE, N.D. — The University of Jamestown men’s basketball team did enough in the first half to get an 87-72 win over Mayville State University on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Comets’ Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
The Jimmies (7-7, 2-1) could not miss in the first half taking a 52-28 lead into the break. The Jimmies shot 61% from the field and 62% from three while adding nine points off five Comets turnovers and only giving up four points off their four turnovers.
The Jimmies’ 52 points in the opening 20 minutes are the most they have scored in a half since they scored 52 in the second half of a win over Mount Marty on Feb. 17, 2024.
The Jimmies’ scoring was coming from up and down the lineup with eight players finding the scoresheet, led by Jimmy Llinas’ 11 points.
The Comets’ biggest advantage over the Jimmies in the first half was the free throw line where they went 3-for-5 and the Jimmies went 0-for-1.
Early in the second half, the Comets (11-6, 2-2) trimmed their deficit to 11 points at 54-43 but the Jimmies responded by stretching the lead out to 23 points at 69-46 with 11:47 to go. The Jimmies would respond to every run and finished the game with a Silas Bennion four-point play with 36 seconds left to get the 15-point win.
The Jimmies finished the game shooting 54% from the field, 48% from three and 71% from the free throw line. The Comets shot 48% from the field, 23% from three and 75% from the stripe.
The Jimmies are back in action at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, when they host Bellevue.
