Jahmai Mashack dove on the floor in Tennessee basketball’s late December game against Middle Tennessee State.
The Vols guard rolled over, looked at the pinky finger on his left hand and knew something was wrong. The finger didn’t look right but Mashack isn’t deterred.
“Nothing’s gonna keep me off the court,” Mashack said Friday.
Mashack said the injured finger feels good and he is “just ready to go out there and play” as No. 1 Tennessee (13-0) opens SEC play against Arkansas (11-2) on Saturday (1 p.m. ET, ESPN) at Food City Center. The injury led to Vols coach Rick Barnes only playing Mashack for four minutes in the second half of UT’s final nonconference game against Norfolk State on Tuesday.
Mashack is averaging 6.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.4 steals in 29.2 minutes.

Mashack went to the bench at the 18:47 mark in UT’s 82-64 win against MTSU on Dec. 23, then went down the tunnel. He returned to the game and finished it, saying Friday there was no way he wasn’t going to play.
He had tape on his left hand in that game and again in Tennessee’s 67-52 win against Norfolk State.
The Californian said it will “take a minute” before the hand is healed, but he does not plan on missing time.
“I’ve got to play with the cards that I’ve been dealt,” Mashack said. “I’m gonna act like I’m 100% with that mindset and not hold anything back.”
Mashack is working on rehabbing the injury with trainer Chad Newman. He said he continues to do everything he can to be a close to 100% as possible.
