Butler losing streak reaches 7 — longest since 2014 — as Dawgs give it away vs. St. John’s

Butler overcame a slow start to take a four-point lead into halftime, but turnovers killed the Bulldogs, allowing St. John’s to pull out a 70-62 win at Carnesecca Arena.

The loss is Butler’s seventh in a row, tying a program low set during Brandon Miller’s lone season as coach in 2014.

Pierre Brooks II led Butler with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Here are three takeaways from the loss which sends the Dawgs to a 7-8 record (0-4 in Big East).

Butler can’t capitalize on ugly offensive performance from SJU

St. John’s shot an ugly 1-for-21 from 3-point range and the Red Storm still managed to win. St. John’s was bailed out by a season-high 21 turnovers from Butler, which St. John’s turned into 19 points off takeaways.

Butler coach Thad Matta tried to inject life into the team, moving Kolby King into the starting lineup for Finley Bizjack, but the offense started as slow as ever. Poor shooting from St. John’s was the only thing that kept Butler in the game. Pierre Brooks’ 3-pointer got the Dawgs within one with 3:56 remaining. Butler would not make another field goal until the final second of the game.

The longest 11 minutes, 20 seconds

Eleven minutes, 20 seconds. That’s the amount of game time that passed between Butler made field goals. The Bulldogs went without a field goal the final 6:03 during its late-game collapse against Villanova. Pierre Brooks II’s layup 5:17 into Saturday’s game against St. John’s finally ended the Bulldogs’ shooting slump.

Butler missed its first nine shots of the game. The Dawgs started 1-for-14 from the field before their offense started to pick up. Butler missed layups, 3-pointers and everything in between early on. In addition to the poor shooting from the field, Butler shot just 3-for-11 from the free throw line in the first half and scored just four points in the game’s first 10 minutes.
