Blugold men’s basketball prepares for first conference game amidst a competitive WIAC

EAU CLAIRE— Blugold men’s basketball will face off against the UW-La Crosse Eagles for the first conference game of the season this Saturday at La Crosse. The Blugolds are currently ranked fifth of eight in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and will need to remain in the top six teams in order to qualify for the WIAC tournament later this season. The Eagles are ranked third in the WIAC.

The Blugolds season record so far is 8-3 for an overall win percentage of .727. They are going into conference games coming off of a seven game win streak. Last year the Blugolds entered conference game play with a record of 7-4, and went 5-9 in conference games for an overall record of 12-13.

The WIAC is a competitive conference with three teams ranked among the top Division III teams nationally, including UW-La Crosse, and an additional team receiving votes in national rankings. UW-La Crosse is ranked No. 20 nationally. UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point are nationally ranked at No. 5 and No. 11 respectively.

UW-Oshkosh, which the Blugolds will play next on Wednesday, January 8 in Oshkosh, is not ranked but received votes in the national rankings. The Blugolds will play each team in the WIAC twice before end of season conference rankings are finalized and determine who moves onto the WIAC tournament.

The Blugold’s first conference game will begin at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Mitchell Hall in La Crosse. The Blugolds’ first home conference game will be next Saturday January 11 at 5 p.m. against UW-River Falls at the Sonnentag Event Center.
