Balanced Panthers roll to big win

Eddy Jones Jr. scored a game-leading 17 points to lead six Panthers in double figures as the Kentucky Wesleyan College men’s basketball team rolled to an 84-57 win over conference foe Cedarville on Thursday at the Sportscenter.

Jones made 7-of-12 shots from the floor, including 2-of-3 from long range, and added four rebounds, four assists and a block as the Panthers (9-2, 3-0 G-MAC) won their ninth straight regular-season game.

Fatih Hukuk finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and three assists for Wesleyan, which also got 12 points apiece from Kennedy Miles (six assists, five rebounds), Quentin Toles (nine assists, five rebounds) and Longa McIntire (six rebounds). Terrence Ringo Jr. recorded 10 points with eight rebounds and two blocks.

“It was really back and forth early, and it was just a matter of running some stops off,” said KWC head coach Drew Cooper. “Our guys felt comfortable offensively, and so we were able to keep making shots. There were little swings there that really helped us out.

“I was happy with our guys. We’ve got to maintain our business- like attitude and do it again Saturday.”

The Panthers, who shot 52.3% from the field and connected on 8-of-18 attempts from 3-point range (47.1%), jumped out to a 7-1 advantage to open the game and never trailed from there.

Wesleyan built a pair of seven-point leads in the first six minutes, but a 5-0 spurt pulled Cedarville (7-4, 2-2) to within 18-16 with 12:57 left in the first half. A layup and dunk from Ringo bookended a 6-0 run that pushed KWC back to a 24-16 lead less than two minutes later.

Ethan Sellars made a 3 to trim Cedarville’s deficit to six points with 6:36 remaining before halftime, but Toles responded with seven straight points to give the Panthers a 37-24 lead. Consecutive 3s from Anthony Ruffolo brought the Yellow Jackets to within seven points, but Wesleyan scored 10 of the next 12 points to seize a 47-32 lead at intermission.
