Here are the New Year’s resolutions for the Xavier Musketeers in 2025

According to Columbia University study cited by CBS News, nearly half of Americans make New Year’s resolutions and only 25% of people stay committed to those aspirations after just 30 days.

Fewer than 10% accomplish what they set out to do when the calendar flips.

Xavier (9-5, 1-2 Big East) will try to beat those odds with 17 conference games over the next 64 days prior to the Big East Tournament in New York City.

What are the New Year’s resolutions for the Musketeers?

Health

Xavier’s bench is running low from a string of injuries. It began in October, when center Lassina Traore suffered a torn ACL in practice. In December, backup guard Trey Green was announced out indefinitely with a health-related matter. −

The biggest blow came just after the Crosstown Shootout loss in Clifton, when Zach Freemantle was announced out indefinitely with a lower-body injury.

First and foremost, Xavier can’t afford any more setbacks on the injury front. Sean Miller is already using multiple guys in the frontcourt − Jerome Hunter, Cam Fletcher, John Hugley − who were coming off injuries last year.

Xavier’s Zach Freemantle (32) could return this season after suffering a lower body injury against UC Dec. 14. The veteran forward has returned to practice in a limited capacity.

The good news? Xavier ended 2024 with Freemantle returning to practice in a limited capacity and Miller is hopeful he could return this season.

“I think we’re more optimistic that at some point he’ll be able to return,” Miller said Tuesday. “We just don’t really know the timetable.”

Signature wins

The 20-game Big East gauntlet is a grind. Xavier has plenty of tests coming up over the next two-plus months and, despite a 2-4 stretch, has every opportunity to build an NCAA Tournament resume.

The big wins have just eluded this team in heartbreaking…
