What we learned from UC Bearcats loss to Kansas State to open Big 12 play

MANHATTAN, Kansas – On their first visit to Kansas State’s home gym in 62 years, the No. 16 Cincinnati Bearcats fell short against the Wildcats 70-67. UC never led in the second half, while Kansas State held the upper hand for over 35 of the 40 minutes.

Kansas State was led by Coleman Hawkins with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Dug McDaniel added 17. The Bearcats got 18 from Dan Skillings Jr. and a double-double from Dillon Mitchell with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Wildcats broke a three-game losing streak and got their first win since Dec. 1. The Bearcats get their first loss since Dec. 3 when they fell at Villanova. Kansas State is 7-5 (1-0 Big 12), UC drops to 10-2 (0-1 Big 12).

Though it wasn’t a sellout at Bramlage Coliseum, enough Kansas State fans attended the Star Wars promotion to fill the old building with purple, pounding noise.

UC led for just 24 seconds in the first half and trailed 31-29. Though they’ve had more turnovers in games, the ones Monday seemed extra costly. At the buzzer they had handed the ball over 15 times.

Kansas State last won vs. UC in 1958 in a double-overtime NCAA tournament game. Monday’s win puts the series in favor of UC 8-2.

Kansas State’s Dug McDaniel dug in well

In his first start for Kansas State in November, McDaniel had 16 points against LSU. He didn’t start again until Monday night. The former Michigan Wolverine who averaged 16.3 points last season, got his money’s worth against UC. McDaniel had 17 points.

Another slow start for Cincinnati Bearcats on road
