Coming out of a 10-day break following a string of three gut-wrenching close losses, Xavier got the bounce-back it desperately needed when Seton Hall came to town to close out the calendar year.

Xavier wrapped up 2024 with a 94-72 victory over Seton Hall Tuesday at Cintas Center, giving the Musketeers their first Big East win of the season.

Ryan Conwell leads Xavier’s efficient offense

Xavier guard Ryan Conwell eclipsed 1,000 career collegiate points in the 72-70 loss to Marquette, but he was held to just 3-of-10 from the field and a 1-of-6 performance from beyond the arc.

It was the first time this season Conwell failed to make multiple 3-pointers in a game and the Indiana State transfer made up for it with a dominant showing Tuesday to snap Xavier’s three-game skid.

After Seton Hall grabbed an early 5-0 lead, Conwell scored eight points over Xavier’s ensuing 16-0 run. His floater in the lane beat the first-half buzzer and gave him a game-high 18 at the intermission with Xavier leading 44-31.

Conwell finished with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting before fouling out with 5:46 left.

Xavier kept a relatively clean stat sheet against Seton Hall

Xavier was able to avoid the dreaded late-game turnovers that plagued the Musketeers over its losing streak.

Xavier played the first half with just two turnovers and were in the bonus in less than nine minutes. Xavier shot 52.2% from the field in the first half, got to the free-throw line 20 times and turned in 1.4 points per possession in the opening 20 minutes.

Seton Hall’s defense had lived off takeaways, ranking No. 18 in the nation in turnover percentage coming in. Xavier was sloppier in the second half (8 turnovers) but were able to shoot 62.5% to pull away with ease.
