Scouting report: How Xavier Musketeers can end 2024 with Big East victory over Seton Hall

No team is ready to put 2024 in the rearview mirror more than the Xavier Musketeers.

Xavier’s calendar year began with a one-point road loss to Villanova. Close losses and brutal injuries have been the common theme with Xavier going 17-17 overall and 8-12 in Big East play following tough losses to UConn and Marquette over a current three-game losing streak.

Before the ball drops, Xavier has a chance to get up off the mat when Seton Hall visits Cintas Center Tuesday afternoon.

A get-right game? Xavier got a reset over Christmas break and KenPom gives the Musketeers an 85% chance to beat Seton Hall, which is the highest win probability remaining on Xavier’s schedule.

Ratings: Xavier is No. 54 in KenPom and Seton Hall is No. 134. In the NCAA’s NET Rankings, Xavier is No. 62 and Seton Hall is No. 179.

History: Seton Hall leads the all-time series, 16-13 and has gone 12-10 since Xavier joined the Big East. The two teams split the regular-season series last year with each club winning at home by double figures.

Shaheen Holloway is 1-3 against Xavier since becoming Seton Hall’s head coach in 2022.

Overview: Just after winning an NIT Championship, Seton Hall lost several key players in the transfer portal, and it’s been tough sledding in year three of the Shaheen Holloway era.

Seton Hall suffered early losses to Fordham and Hofstra and heads into Cintas Center on a four-game skid. The Pirates opened Big East play with a 12-point road loss to Villanova and a 61-60 home defeat to Georgetown. Seton Hall has lost three games by a single point.
