One of Indiana’s top freshmen already has a Notre Dame offer: ‘She can do everything.’

Janaya Cooper, one of Indiana’s top high school girls basketball recruits in the Class of 2028, picked up her first high-major offer Sunday. The Fort Wayne Snider freshman tweeted Sunday she received an offer from Notre Dame while in South Bend for the Fighting Irish’s game vs. Virginia.

It’s at least the eighth offer for the 5-11 Cooper, who held offers from Purdue Fort Wayne, Dayton, Bowling Green, Youngstown State, Eastern Michigan, Ball State and Northern Kentucky entering her freshman year.

The guard/forward is averaging over 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists, three steals and a block for the Panthers, with a 49% mark from the field. She scored at least 11 points in each of her first seven games — a stretch which included McCutcheon, Lake Central, Warsaw and Columbia City — then erupted for a career-best 33 points and 13 rebounds vs. Merrillville.

Fort Wayne Schneider’s Janaya Cooper (24) shoots the ball during a game between the Valparaiso High School Vikings vs. the Fort Wayne Snider Panthers on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024, at Noblesville High School in Noblesville Indiana. The game was part of the Noblesville Holiday Tournament at The Mill.

Snider coach Reggie Tharp joined The Scorers Table on Sunday to talk about the rising freshman, who has scored 20-plus points in four of her past six games, including a 30-point performance Saturday vs. Norwell.

Whereas 2024 Miss Basketball runner-up Jordyn Poole (now a freshman at Purdue) was an extension of Tharp at point guard, he described Cooper as more of a wing-3 who controls the game on the offensive glass and through her ability to get to the basket and to the foul line.

“Janaya can do everything,” the third-year coach said. “We like to put her on the elbow, get her in the slot some, and then we’ll put her on the block when we can get some mismatches. With the shooters we have around her. It works sometimes.”
