IU basketball vs. Winthrop player ratings: Hoosiers struggle, but bench player saves day

BLOOMINGTON – Indiana outlasted Winthrop, 77-68, in a sleepy nonconference final Sunday afternoon. Here’s how Mike Woodson’s team graded out:

STARTERS

∎ Myles Rice: 7/10

At this point undeniably Indiana’s best player. His mercurial performances can frustrate fans but if the Hoosiers and Rice together find ways to bring the best out of him consistently, IU’s horizons brighten. Eighteen points, four rebounds and three assists bore that out Sunday.

∎ Trey Galloway: 6/10

Provided Rice a solid running mate, using his defense to create offense on an afternoon when Indiana (10-3, 1-1) struggled at times with both. Finished with 11 points and five assists, all of them needed.

∎ Mackenzie Mgbako: 5/10

Had some good moments defensively, and his four assists shouldn’t go unnoticed. Still, 4-of-13 from the floor and bore the look of a player who could probably have attacked more mismatches. Mgbako continues to be this team’s X-factor, both full of potential and also frustratingly inconsistent at times.

∎ Luke Goode: 5/10

Asked to fill starter’s minutes for the first time this season, with Oumar Ballo sidelined. Still struggling to find his 3-point shot, but didn’t let it affect his defense. His problems behind the arc reflect his team’s overall issues at the moment — Indiana shot just 1-of-20 from 3.

∎ Malik Reneau: 5/10

Has to be better than the foul problems that kept him off the floor and out of rhythm for too much of Sunday’s game. Ballo’s absence already left the Hoosiers short in the post, where they go for so much of their offense. Reneau was effective when he was in the game, to the tune of 14 points and seven rebounds, making it all the more glaring when he wasn’t.
