The Iowa Hawkeyes had their hands full with figuring out how they were going to replace the production they had from their backcourt the previous few years.
Between Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin, and others departing, Iowa had to replenish their guard play. That is when Lucy Olsen, the transfer from Villanova, entered the equation.
Olsen, who is still early in her career with the Hawkeyes, has already shown she can score and be the guard that head coach Jan Jensen needs. It also already has her among CBS Sports’ top women’s college basketball transfers for 2024-25.
One of the biggest questions coming into this season was what would happen to Iowa after the departure of all-time Division I leading scorer Caitlin Clark, and other top contributors in Kate Martin, Gabbie Marshall and Molly Davis. Coach Lisa Bluder retired and Jan Jensen took over, but Lucy Olsen’s arrival has made this rebuilding period a lot easier for the Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes started the season unranked but have since cracked the AP Top 25, which should help give them confidence as they get ready for conference play.
Olsen was the nation’s third-leading scorer behind Clark and USC’s JuJu Watkins last season while playing for Villanova. She continues to be a strong offensive weapon with her strength being the mid-range game. At 18.6 points per game, Olsen is one of the nation’s top 50 scorers. – Isabel Gonzalez, CBS Sports
Olsen carried quite the pedigree when she came to Iowa. She was an All-Big East selection last year, an All-American Honorable Mention, and averaged 23.3 points per game.
This year, Olsen is averaging 18.6 points per game, shooting at a clip of 44.6%, averaging four rebounds per game, and 5.1 assists per game.
