What we learned from Cincinnati Bearcats basketball win over Grambling State Sunday

The Cincinnati Bearcats men’s basketball team concluded their non-conference 2024-25 schedule Sunday afternoon with a pre-holiday pounding of Grambling State 84-49.

The game was briefly tied early, but UC never trailed and the outcome was never in question. Aziz Bandaogo led three players in double figures with 15 points and six rebounds. Dillon Mitchell had 13 points and seven rebounds and Day Day Thomas added 12 points and five boards.

“It was quick turnaround from Xavier to Dayton to this game,” Mitchell said. “They were a good team but we knew we had to stay focused and locked in for it.”

UC goes to 10-1 with the win with Grambling State falling to 2-10. Ernest Ross led the Tigers with 16 points.

The Bearcats were less than hospitable to the visiting Tigers in their first-ever meeting, getting out to a 22-point early lead in the first half. Grambling cut it to 13 by halftime, then 12 in the second half, before the Bearcats hit the gas pedal to tell all a good night before their brief Christmas break.

“I was very disappointed how we finished the first half,” UC coach Wes Miller said. “But, I thought coming out in the second half our guys came out with energy, played the right way, got their hands on basketballs and got out in transition. This kind of game can be difficult for a team.”

Grambling State had played some Power Four teams close, including only losing by two to then-No. 24 Ole Miss on their home floor. They were an NCAA tournament team a year ago. However, just as UC held Dayton to a season-low 59 points Friday, Grambling State’s 49 was a season-low.
