Cam Carr has elected to leave the Tennessee basketball in the middle of the season, a source with direct knowledge told Knox News on Monday. The source requested anonymity because no official announcement has been made by Tennessee nor Carr.
Carr likely will enter the transfer portal, which opens in late March following the season.
The sophomore guard has missed the past month with a left thumb injury and played in four games this season. The 6-foot-6 guard is averaging 4.8 points in 10.5 minutes per game this season. He has not played since suffering the injury against Austin Peay on Nov. 17.
The No. 1 Vols (11-0) host Middle Tennessee State (9-3) on Monday (7 p.m. ET, SEC Network+).
Carr averaged 2.3 points in 18 games in his two seasons at UT. He made a key 3-pointer in Tennessee’s Sweet 16 win against Creighton last season, filling in while Santiago Vescovi was ill.
Tennessee is down to nine available scholarship players following Carr’s departure. Sophomore forward J.P. Estrella is out for the season after undergoing left foot surgery in November to address an injury that began in the offseason and lingered into the season.
The Vols have a proven group of guards in seniors Jordan Gainey, Chaz Lanier, Jahmai Mashack and Zakai Zeigler.
Carr was the No. 56 prospect in the 2023 class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He picked UT over offers from Kansas State, Louisville, Northwestern and Virginia among others.

The Minnesota native is the second player from Tennessee’s freshman group last season to leave the program. Guard Freddie Dilione V transferred to Penn State following last season, his first at UT after enrolling early in the middle of the 2022-23 season. Estrella and forward Cade Phillips are the remaining players from the original 2023 recruiting class.
Carr is the son of Chris Carr, who played six seasons in the NBA after playing at Southern Illinois.
