Akron Zips basketball finishes El Paso trip with 1-1 record after win vs. Jackson State

EL PASO – Akron used a big second half to defeat Jackson State, 68-50, on Saturday night in the consolation round of the 63rd annual WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational at the Don Haskins Center.

The Zips (7-4) outscored the Tigers (0-12), 38-21, in the second half. Akron rebounded from a 74-58 loss to Yale in Friday’s opening round game.

Akron made 14 of 28 from the field in the second half and were 6-of-16 from 3-poinrt range. Jackson State made just 6 of 30 from the field in the second half.

Guard Shammah Scott led for Zips in double figures with 12 points. Guards Isaiah Gray and Sharron Young added 11 points apiece and forward James Okonkwo scored 10.

Akron led 30-29 at halftime behind eight points from Okonkwo. Jackson State was led by seven points from Jayme Mitchell, Jr. Akron was just 3-for-23 from 3-point range in the first half but outscored the Tigers 9-3 at at the foul line.

Up next

The Zips will travel to New Jersey on Dec. 30 to take on Princeton.
