With 2024 coming to a close, the North Carolina Tar Heels’ NCAA Tournament chances are doing the same.

UNC is 6-5 just four days before Christmas. North Carolina’s best win came against a ranked Dayton squad, but the Flyers are the only ranked opponent North Carolina beat in six tries.

The Tar Heels aren’t getting the elite guard play we expected from RJ Davis, Seth Trimble and Elliot Cadeau. UNC struggles to hit 3-pointers, which was supposed to be a hallmark of this season’s time, while the Tar Heels’ lack of height is hurting them against stronger opponents.

North Carolina now turns its attention to the UCLA Bruins, who are currently ranked 18th in the courntry. UCLA (10-1, 2-0) is thriving during its first season in the Big 10, with a pair of conferences victories over Washington and Oregon.

Selection Sunday is huge on Quad 1 victories, which UNC doesn’t have a ton of. If the Tar Heels keep struggling like they are through December, though, they won’t get anywhere close to the NCAA Tournament.

Beating UCLA would be just one win, but it’d go a long way to easing people’s doubts about North Carolina basketball. UNC has come back in most of its losses, but can’t close those games out.

Will the Tar Heels fall to .500 after today’s game, or will they move to 7-5? Both Blue Bloods will kick off from Madison Square Garden in New York City, tipping off at 3:30 p.m.
