UTEP defeats Jackson State in opener of WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational

UTEP will play in the championship game of the 63rd annual WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational at the Don Haskins Center.

The Miners (8-3) took care of Jackson State (0-11), 67-61, on Friday in the opener of the two-day event. UTEP led by as much as 22, 63-41, in the second half before the Tigers made a late charge to make the game close in the final four minutes.

Senior forward Kevin Kalu recorded his first double-double with 12 rebounds and 12 points, and forward Otis Frazier III scored 16. Jackson State has played all 11 games this season on the road.

The Miners led for nearly 18 minutes of the first half and led 31-22 at halftime.

Up next for UTEP basketball

The Miners will play Yale for the championship at 7 p.m. Jackson State will play Akron for third place at 5 p.m. Yale defeated Akron, 74-58, in the first game of the tourney.
