COLLEGE STATION — Star point guard Wade Taylor IV missed the first game of his collegiate career, but the Texas A&M men’s basketball team rode a quality shooting night by senior guard Hayden Hefner in his absence en route to win No. 10.

“He wasn’t happy. I could tell by his facial expressions and his body language,” guard Manny Obaseki said. “It shows how much he cares.”

“It’s our first time doing it (playing without Taylor). There were some parts that were good,” head coach Buzz Williams said following the win.

With their next game not until Dec. 28, Williams was noncommital about how much time Taylor may miss in addition to the HCU game.

On Friday afternoon, the Aggies (10-2) took care of business ahead of a week off, beating Houston Christian (4-8) 77-45 to capture their sixth win in a row. The Aggies have one final game before their conference slate begins against the Texas Longhorns on Jan. 4.

A&M is ranked 11th in the USA Today Coaches Poll and 12th in the Associated Press Top 25. HCU was not ranked in either poll coming into the matchup.

Hefner led the Aggies, finishing the afternoon with 19 points while shooting 7-13 from the field. Guard Zhuric Phelps added 10 points and five rebounds.

“Basically taking it one day at a time, knowing my role and being the best at my role,” Hefner told reporters following the impressive day. “That’s all I can control, so that’s what I focus on.”

Huskies’ guard D’Aundre Samuels led HCU with 12 points, shooting 6-for-12 from the field while collecting four rebounds.

The Aggies outshot the Huskies, finishing 32-for-68, compared to the Huskies’ 15-for-49, while A&M also led the rebound battle 46 to 24.
