Grand Canyon men’s basketball coach Bryce Drew’s signs 6-year extension

Grand Canyon men’s basketball coach Bryce Drew is committed to turning the Lopes into a national college power through at least the remainder of the decade.

The Phoenix Business Journal reported Thursday that Drew recently purchased a Valley home for $6.2 million. In the article, GCU confirmed Drew signed a six-year contract extension.

No financial details were given.

Jamie Boggs, vice president for athletics at GCU, confirmed the extension in a text to The Republic early Friday.

“He is a tireless worker, very driven to continue to elevate us at the national level and a great fit for our Christian mission,” Boggs said.

Drew also texted The Republic Friday:

“It’s a blessing to work at GCU with a mission, vision, and support of our administration,” Drew said regarding the extension. “I am thankful to be here and want to work my hardest to keep elevating the basketball program nationally.”

Drew took the Lopes to three of the last four NCAA Tournaments with Western Athletic Conference tournament championships. Last season, the Lopes won the most games (30) since joining Division I and won its first NCAA Tournament game, upsetting No. 5-seed Saint Mary’s College 75-66 as the No. 12 seed in the West Regional in Spokane.

GCU back on winning track

GCU (7-4) returned home from a two-game road trip, in which the Lopes lost to Georgia and Louisiana Tech, with a 74-51 rout of Chicago State (0-13) on Thursday night.

Drew shook up his starting lineup with Tyon Grant-Foster and Collin Moore coming off the bench and Makaih Williams and Caleb Shaw inserted into the starting lineup.

Forward Lok Wur came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points on 8 of 13 shooting, 2 of 5 from beyond the 3-point arc. His previous best was 16 points in the WAC tournament championship game last season against UT Arlington.

This was GCU’s 13th consecutive win over Chicago State, which formerly played in the WAC. This was the fifth different starting lineup this season by GCU, which rolled up a 40-20 halftime…
