Dec. 18—’s progression at Illinois has been an interesting case. In year one, the 6-foot-3 forward, who followed coach from Dayton to C-U ahead of the 2022-23 season, was known more as a scorer with the then-sophomore one of the best three-point shooters on the Illini at 40 percent.
Year two at Illinois for the Goshen, Ind., native was largely robbed by a wrist injury that Shoup-Hill played through but not so surprisingly affected her productivity.
But year three for Shoup-Hill has seen the senior flash the complete set of skills in her bag. Mostly it’s been the veteran forward’s defense and rebounding that has shined through, though.
Her offense has lagged behind a bit through 11 games for 9-2 Illinois with Shoup-Hill still averaging 5.8 points despite shooting 16.7 percent on three-pointers.
Where Shoup-Hill has proven valuable is as a secondary rebounder to with Shoup-Hill pulling down a career-high 8.1 boards per game. That along with defending at a high level as a power forward while playing more than 31 minutes a game.
“How she’s playing right now, I know with Brynn she can still score more no doubt about it,” Green said. “But her rebounding and her defense she’s someone you can’t really have off the floor. It’s almost like how I feel with K.B. because they’re just so solid defensively. She’s always knowing what’s going on.
“She’s actually for someone that I have for three years been on about talking (more) she actually communicates on the floor one of the highest (on the team). She has a great understanding of the game. So, she’s just such an integral piece out there.”
