AUBURN — No. 2 Auburn basketball could be without its best player for at least the remainder of Tuesday’s contest against Georgia State, as All-American Johni Broome exited early with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.
At the 17:42 mark of Tuesday’s game, Broome rushed himself off the floor and into Auburn’s tunnel, holding his shoulder. At the 11:34 media timeout, Broome returned to the bench wearing a hoodie and what appeared to be an ice wrap over his right shoulder, sitting at the end of Auburn’s bench.
Broome had recorded just two points on 1-of-3 shooting at the point of his exit. The program has yet to release a statement regarding Broome’s status, but Andy Burcham, the voice of the Auburn Tigers, said on the Auburn Sports Network that Broome will be reevaluated at halftime.
In 10 games, Broome is leading the Tigers in scoring (19.7 points), rebounds (12.7), assists (3.8) and blocks (2.8). He rebounding average leads the country, and his block average leads the SEC.
Who replaces Johni Broome in Auburn basketball’s lineup?
Auburn Tigers forward Chaney Johnson (31) dunks the ball on a fast break as Auburn Tigers take on North Alabama Lions at Neville Arena in Auburn, Ala., on Monday, Nov. 18, 2024. Auburn Tigers lead North Alabama Lions 50-37 at halftime.
Without Broome, Auburn will lean heavily on starting center Dylan Cardwell, but reserve forward Chaney Johnson is the next Tiger up at the four position. In 10 games, Johnson is averaging 9.1 points and 5.8 rebounds.
It’s also likely SMU transfer Ja’Heim “Turtle” Hudson would see elevated minutes without Broome. Hudson has played in just five contests this season, and he’s averaging 6.6 minutes a game and 1.8 points.
