Despite the absence of star freshman Tre Johnson, Texas basketball raced past Arkansas-Pine Bluff 121-57 in a nonconference game Sunday at Moody Center.
Johnson, a 6-foot-6 guard who leads the SEC in scoring at 19.9 points a game, did not play because of a right hip issue, according to Texas officials. Johnson is considered day to day and could play in the Longhorns’ next game Thursday at 7 p.m. against New Orleans at Moody Center.
Texas forward Nic Codie, center, drives to the basket against Arkansas-Pine Bluff during the Longhorns’ 121-57 win Sunday at Moody Center. Codie, a 6-foot-8 freshman, scored a career-high 20 points in the conconference win.
With Johnson out, another freshman stepped into the spotligh. Nic Codie, a 6-8 forward, registered a career-high 20 points as Texas scored its most points since a 122-71 win over Sam Houston in 2003. Codie shot 8-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, while playing a career-high 16 minutes.
Guard Julian Larry added a double-double with 11 points and career-high 13 assists, and junior guard Jordan Pope tallied a season-high 17 points to go with four assists and a career-high four steals. Junior guard Chendall Weaver added 14 points and eight rebounds, and forward Kadin Shedrick had 14 points and three steals.
As a team, the Longhorns shot 17-of-30 from 3-point range, which is one short of the program record of 18 made 3-pointers set in 1997 against Kansas State.
