For the first time in two-plus seasons, Purdue basketball finds itself in unfamiliar territory.
The Boilermakers’ nation-leading streak of 43 straight weeks in the AP top 15 was snapped with Purdue landing at No. 16 this week following a 70-66 loss to Texas A&M at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Insider: Purdue loss to A&M another case of opponent dictating terms
Doyel: The more aggressive, physically superior team won. For once, that wasn’t Purdue.
It’s Purdue’s first time outside the top 15 since being ranked No. 24 in the second week of the 2022-23 season. The Boilers were ranked in the top-5 the rest of that year and all of the 2023-24 season.
Purdue (8-3) began this season ranked 14th and reached as high as No. 6 before losses to Marquette, Penn State and Texas A&M.
Purdue’s streak nearly doubled the second-place team on the list. Tennessee, the nation’s No. 1 team, now enjoys the longest streak inside the top 15 at 23 weeks.
The Boilermakers will have a chance to get back in the top 15 with a win over No. 2 Auburn on Saturday in Birmingham.
