IOWA CITY − The Cy-Hawk men’s basketball rivalry has seen lopsided games in recent years. Thursday’s edition was the closest it had been in seven years, making for an exciting and satisfying victory for Iowa State players as they defeated Iowa, 89-80.
This was Iowa State’s first victory at Carver-Hawkeye Arena since 2014. It was the first time the Cyclones had won back-to-back games over the Hawkeyes since they won three straight meetings from 2013-15.
No. 3 Iowa State trailed for most of the game. The Cyclones tied it midway through the second half after a 13-4 run that was capped off by a Nate Heise second-chance bucket to make it 66-66 with 7:44 remaining.
