Louisville basketball head coach Pat Kelsey said Sunday he’s “figuring out what buttons to push to get this team to be the best that they can be” in the wake of season-ending injuries to Kasean Pryor (knee) and Koren Johnson (shoulder).

The Cardinals’ (5-4, 0-1 ACC) game today against  UTEP (6-2) at the KFC Yum! Center is his last chance to pinpoint the proper combination before facing archrival Kentucky, which ranks fifth in the country, this weekend.

Tipoff between U of L and the Miners is set for 7 p.m.

Louisville is looking to snap a three-game losing streak. The Cards opened ACC play with a loss to then-No. 9 Duke last weekend — a game they led for nearly 30 minutes and by as many as 14 points during the first half.

With fourth-year coach Joe Golding at the helm, UTEP has won five of its past six games and comes in at 150th on KenPom.com’s adjusted efficiency rankings. The Miners rank 41st in the country with a 55.6% minutes continuity from a team that went 18-16 last season. This is their first matchup with a high-major opponent.

Louisville’s Kasean Pryor says knee surgery was a success

Approaching 90 minutes until tipoff, fifth-year Louisville forward Kasean Pryor took to X, formerly Twitter, to report that his knee surgery was a success.

“Now the road and work to recovery begins!” he wrote.

Pryor tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the Cards’ loss to Oklahoma in the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis championship game and will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

The 6-foot-10, 225-pound Chicago native could apply for a medical redshirt, granting him an additional year of eligibility, but Kelsey said the NCAA does not consider those applications until the season is over.
