Duke basketball win at Louisville gives Cooper Flagg, Blue Devils a first under Jon Scheyer

If you need more evidence Duke basketball is different this season, look at the Blue Devils’ road record.

Following its 76-65 comeback win at Louisville (5-4, 0-1) in the ACC opener on Sunday, No. 9 Duke (7-2, 1-0 ACC) has started the season with wins in each of its first two true road games.

That’s a first for the Blue Devils under third-year coach Jon Scheyer. Duke lost its first two road games in each of Scheyer’s first two seasons before getting wins at Arizona and Louisville this year.

Cooper Flagg fouled out for the first time in his career, but scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils against the Cardinals. Tyrese Proctor (13 points), Kon Knueppel (12 points) and Sion James (11 points) joined Flagg as double-figure scorers.

Despite fouling out for the first time in his career, Flagg put up impressive numbers with 20 points and 12 rebounds for his second straight double-double performance and fourth of the season. He had 13 points and nine rebounds in 12 second-half minutes. The freshman continues to make his case to be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Kon Knueppel, Sion James, Maliq Brown spark Blue Devils’ key stretch

Duke trailed by five midway through the second half when Flagg picked up his fourth foul and walked to the bench. The Blue Devils responded with a 18-2 run, keyed by Kon Knueppel’s 3-pointers and Sion James’ relentless attack on the rim. In the first half, Duke had 12 points in the paint. With an improved emphasis on getting to the basket, the Blue Devils had 18 points in the paint with 7 minutes left in the second half. They finished with 34 paint points and Duke outscored Louisville 26-10 down the stretch to pull away on the scoreboard. Maliq Brown scored six points to aid Knueppel and James during that run.
