John Calipari demands more consistency from Arkansas basketball after win over UTSA

John Calipari revealed a vulnerability of his team in the immediate aftermath of Arkansas basketball’s 75-60 victory over the University of Texas San Antonio.

“It’s hard for us to win if Boogie (Fland) doesn’t play well,” Calipari said.

Unfortunately for the Razorbacks (7-2), that sentiment might apply to the entirety of their short rotation.

The Razorbacks once again got off to a slow start in front of their home fans Saturday afternoon against UTSA (3-5). Arkansas couldn’t find a rhythm on offense across the first 20 minutes and trailed the Roadrunners 32-27 at halftime. Only one player had more than four points, and Fland was 0 for 4 with nothing to show in the scoring column

The freshman guard came out of the intermission and found a way to put his imprints on the game, setting up open teammates and skying over bigger players for defensive rebounds. The Hogs quickly erased the five-point deficit and rolled to a 15-point victory with Fland totaling 6 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists.

Fland struggled early Saturday, but it feels like every game Arkansas is missing one of its star players. On Thanksgiving, Johnell Davis and Fland combined for just 11 points on 2 of 15 shooting. Adou Thiero was held to seven points as the Hogs rallied past Miami Tuesday night after scoring 26 against the Illini. Thiero had 26 agains Saturday versus UTSA.

“We’ve been seeing that the whole summer. (Thiero) dominating,” Trevon Brazile said. “Dominating in practice and Coach pushing him. This is just a reflection of the work he’s done this summer and him trusting the coaches.”

With an 18-game schedule in the grueling SEC on the horizon, Arkansas simply needs more consistency from its best players. Calipari believes the problem lies inward.
