Indiana basketball’s win over Miami (Ohio) won’t quiet any concerns for Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON — When Indiana basketball played Miami (Ohio) in 2022 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the game was competitive for about 10 minutes.

The return bout between the programs had the Hoosiers (7-2; 0-0 Big Ten) struggling to pull away deep into the second half in a 76-57 win that won’t quiet any concerns about the team heading into its Big Ten opener against Minnesota on Monday.

Indiana basketball dominates the final eight minutes

It was a late 3-pointer in the corner from Trey Galloway that helped push IU across the finish line.

It sparked a 12-0 run and Galloway was at the center of it all as the Hoosiers’ primary ball-handler down the stretch. He got his third straight start in place of an injured Kanaan Carlyle and finished the game with 13 points ( 3 of 4 from 3-point range).

Galloway’s improved 3-point shooting touch comes after he shot just 26% from the outside last season. This was the second time this season he’s had at least three made 3-pointers after only accomplishing the feat just two times in 31 games last season.

Indiana was finally able to overwhelm the RedHawks in the paint down the stretch as well.

Their lone 7-footer Reece Potter fouled out with 5:11 to go and he was the only player who came close to being able to matchup against IU’s bigs at the rim. Malik Reneau had 19 points and six rebounds and Oumar Ballo had his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 18 rebounds.

Ballo also tied his career-high with six assists.

Indiana basketball’s performance continues to fall short of its talent level

Miami didn’t have anyone in its backcourt capable of defending Myles Rice off the dribble. He added some clips to his highlight reel in the first half with a nifty spin move to the basket and step back 3-pointer off a filthy crossover dribble.

He scored 14 points, but some of that production…
