Why this Memphis basketball team is not at all like last season’s Tigers

Penny Hardaway has his Memphis basketball team back in the national conversation after a runner-up finish at the Maui Invitational.

The Tigers (6-1) are ranked 15th in this week’s USA TODAY Coaches Poll and are No. 16 in the Associated Press Top 25.

Memphis enjoyed similar success last season before falling apart and missing the NCAA Tournament. On this week’s episode of the Tiger Basketball Podcast, beat writer Jason Munz and host Jonah Dylan offer up a handful of reasons why these Tigers absolutely will not suffer the same fate as last season’s team.

In addition, Munz and Dylan unpack the Maui Invitational and offer up their primary takeaways from Memphis’ four-game road swing. They also highlight the performance of guard Tyrese Hunter, look into the prospect of Hardaway adding a midseason transfer, preview the Louisiana Tech game on Wednesday (7 p.m., ESPN+), and give a ringing endorsement of the Memphis Tiger Basketball Insider text group (sign up here).
