Dec. 2—The Missouri Southern State University men’s basketball team had three players hit 15 points Saturday, when the Lions met the University of St. Mary Spires for a nonconference match, beating them 100-68.

Martin Macenis started the scoring with a 3-pointer against the Leavenworth, Kansas, team, and the Lions never stopped. Jaden Taylor added 5 more points for the Lions, bringing their lead to 6 points in the first few minutes. MSSU’s Sam Thompson and Tyrique Brooks helped expand that to a 14-point cushion. Tyrone Wright then started off another run of points with a slam dunk that was part of a 9-point run.

While St. Mary tried to gain back ground, Southern’s Tyriqe Jackson finished the half with a free throw that put the Lions ahead by 25 points at 47-22.

As the second half began, the Spires started out strong, cutting the lead to 20; however, Taylor and Thompson stopped St. Mary’s momentum and kept control by the Lions (4-4).

Brooks halted the Spires’ comeback, responding to their 7-2 run with a layup and a free throw. St. Mary answered with an 8-2 scoring burst at the 13-minute mark to narrow the gap to 20 points. MSSU’s Taylor scored 4 points and Thompson added 2 more to put Southern further ahead.

As both teams exchanged points the Lions maintained their lead. At the 2:02 mark, Isaiah Atwater contributed five points and Prince Agbaeze followed with a layup, extending Southern’s lead to 34 points.
