LAWRENCE — Back on Nov. 26, in Las Vegas, Kansas basketball had to play the final 10 and a half minutes of the game against Duke without Hunter Dickinson.
Dickinson, a graduate center for the Jayhawks, had fallen to the court with a Blue Devils player as they fought for a rebound in a physical play. A review on the play led to officials to calling a flagrant two on Dickinson, which saw him ejected, as the replay showed contact Dickinson made with his foot and the opponent’s head as they were down on the court. At the time Kansas led 57-55, in a game it would eventually win 75-72.
Fast forward to Monday in Lawrence, and Dickinson had the opportunity to address the play and the call from his perspective. He made a similar comment to what KU head coach Bill Self has had to say about what transpired. And in the end, Dickinson took ownership for not being able to finish the game.

“I think the thing that probably got it a flagrant two was the slow-(motion),” Dickinson said. “I feel like if you watched it in real time and just a normal speed, I feel like it was a flagrant one. I don’t think — I feel like a flagrant two needs to be a little bit more malicious intent for that to occur. But, I mean, I put myself in that position and the refs made the call. So, if you’re going to put yourself in that position you can’t really be too picky and choosy with it.”
In the days following the Duke game, Self told reporters back in Lawrence he also didn’t think it was a flagrant two, and that instead it should have been a flagrant one, because he didn’t see anything that outlined Dickinson had tried to hurt the other player. Self also noted if you put a review in slow motion, it’s possible to see more than what actually happened. But Self also acknowledged he might be a little biased when it comes to this situation, and that what Dickinson did was wrong.
