Purdue basketball vs. Ole Miss player ratings: Boilers head home with more silverware

Myles Colvin was California cool under pressure Friday night.

Over the course of the final 26 minutes, Purdue basketball blew a 17-point lead, then rallied from a seven-point deficit.

In the end, Colvin’s putback in the final second lifted the Boilermakers past Ole Miss 80-78 to win the Rady Children’s Invitational in San Diego after previously beating NC State on Thursday.

∎ Braden Smith: 8/10

Smith’s shooting woes vanished with four straight 3s in the first half. He lifted Purdue to its large lead early. He had a rare lapse when he didn’t realize the first half clock expiring and Purdue didn’t get a shot in the final seconds. Offset that with his baseline fadeaway on Purdue’s final possession that allowed enough time for an offensive putback. Smith totaled 18 points, 11 assists and 6 rebounds, furthering his case as the best point guard in Purdue history.

∎ Fletcher Loyer: 7/10

Such a heads up player and on Friday he scored 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting. He’s now reached double figures in all but one game this season (Marshall). He did have a couple turnovers. Loyer’s right-hand runner is bread and butter and he never seems to fail when taking a big shot.

∎ Myles Colvin: 9/10

Sure, you can nitpick a couple of moments, but the sophomore picked a great night to have a career game. He had 15 points in the second half alone, topping his previous career high, and finished with 20. He also had the offensive putback with six-tenths of a second to go, one of four rebounds.

∎ Cam Heide: 5/10

Heide’s offense cooled for the first time in three starts. His lone two points came from the free throw line. Heide did show off his athleticism, skying for an impressive block at the rim in the second…
