IU vs. Providence player ratings: Trey Galloway return to starting lineup boosts Hoosiers

No. 15 IU basketball aren’t coming home from the Bahamas empty-handed after beating Providence 89-73 on Friday afternoon in the Battle 4 Atlantis’ consolation bracket.

The Hoosiers (5-2) led almost the entire way through against a tired-looking Providence team. The Friars had a short turnaround after not getting off the floor until midnight on Thursday night.

STARTERS

∎ Myles Rice: 3/10

Rice’s slump might be the biggest storyline to watch coming out of The Bahamas. He’s completely lost his shot — he shot 1-of-8 Friday and 4-of-23 in the three-day event — while struggling on the defensive end as well. For the third straight game, IU gave up big numbers to the opposing team’s point guard with Jayden Pierre putting up 21 points (5-of-9 from 3-point range) and six assists. Rice got pulled from the floor after picking up back-to-back offensive fouls in the second half. He had more fouls over the past two games (eight) than points (seven).

∎ Trey Galloway: 7/10

The knee didn’t look like it was an issue for Galloway as he took over in the second half for the Hoosiers. He scored 13 of his 18 points in the half and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. He had more 3-pointers in the win (three) than he had in the first six games combined. He spent much of the half as IU’s primary ball-handler and continues to show nice chemistry running the pick-and-roll with Oumar Ballo. Galloway’s improved court vision — he’s had five or more assists in four games — has carried over from last season. He got his first start of the season for an injured Kanaan Carlyle.

∎ Mackenzie Mgbako: 8/10

Mgbako had 25 points and tied a season-high with four 3-pointers….
